Children's Books and Classroom Activities to Encourage Students' Curiosity and Comfort with the Outdoors!
Today's children are less inclined to play or explore the outdoors than the previous generations. Researchers and teachers understand the importance of time out of doors for brain development, development of fine and gross motor skills, problem solving, curiosity, and mental and physical health. Explore children's literature (picture books and novels) that may pique students' interest in being outside and participate in activities appropriate for a wide span of learners that will draw them into nature. There will be a drawing for free books! To access the agenda and handouts, please visit https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1amymnSbgdukZ-r6J32dR7PETFGvXTfK0?usp=sharing.  Documents will be shared until December 31, 2021.

Workshop: Supporting Engagement and Curiosity through Investigations in the Classroom: A Life Science Exemplar (session 1 of 3)
Supporting student engagement and curiosity in your science lessons are key ingredients for attaining learning outcomes. To do so, it takes not only a well-designed lesson, but an understanding of the teacher moves that encourage students to do the sense making in the classroom. This life science exemplar uses an ecology investigation as an exemplar of teaching students about ecosystems, improving their data literacy, and putting them at the forefront of "figuring things out" in your classroom. After engaging in the lesson, teachers will unpack the pedagogy that underpins it.

STEMulating Curiosity in The Age of Inference
The Information Age has promised and delivered many benefits to humanity. Nevertheless, the inundation of easily accessible data can have negative consequences in a scientifically illiterate society lacking proper inferencing skills. Referencing their new book, “Age of Inference: Cultivating a Scientific Mindset,” the presenters contrast the nature of the scientific enterprise with the nature of science classrooms. Taking a deep dive into the nature of science and statistical inferencing using authentic student data, curiosity is revived as young scientists engage in culturally-relevant investigations.

Tennessee CLEAN Act | We can fix Tennessee's litter problem.
Tennessee’s litter problem is well documented. Despite $19 million in taxpayer money being spent to clean up around 23 million pounds of litter year after year, an estimated 100 million pieces of new litter are always along Tennessee roads. The Tennessee River contains more microplastics per gallon than any other studied river in the world. Litter also causes direct damage to key parts of Tennessee’s economy. Tourism and tourist perception is negatively impacted and agriculture suffers an estimated $60 million in damages annually. It’s time for a comprehensive approach to address the huge scope, scale, and intricacies of litter pollution in Tennessee.

A Ban on Using Supplemental Resources in Class? What you need to know and what you can do.
This spring, the Tennessee State House Curriculum subcommittee passed a bill that would have made it very difficult for ALL science teachers in Tennessee to use supplemental resources such as Bill Nye the Science Guy, National Geographic, or whatever fascinating resource you like to bring in the classroom. Not ONE science teacher in the state spoke out about the proposal when it was being debated at the legislature. For various reasons, the State Senate delayed the passage of the bill, but it will be back next year. In this session, TN History for Kids founder Bill Carey will explain what is behind the proposal, what it means, and how science teachers can be better informed about such efforts.

Expansion of the Universe: an OER approach to Hubble's Constant
One advantage of using Open Education Resources is increased flexibility in pedagogical strategies. If learning materials are restricted to publisher-derived content, instructors are forced to model their teaching methodologies around those resources. Thus, instructors are unable to utilize alternative resources if they “compete” with publisher content or would overwhelm students. This is especially true with respect to institutions that standardize content across course sections, and any deviation is considered inappropriate. OER allows instructors at community colleges to tailor learning materials to the local demographics and state-wide observations. This project's OER laboratories will allow faculty to choose and customize their learning materials. Many of Chattanooga State's students are from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds (e.g. Pell-eligible, minority race, non-traditional/returning students, and academically underprepared), many introductory astronomy students will benefit from decreased course costs. This presentation is our flagship laboratory on Expansion of the Universe and utilizes coding, spectroscopy and mathematical methods.

Incorporating Interactive Cross-Curriculum Science in Your Classroom!
This workshop will introduce you to two ways (one that you will complete in the workshop) of incorporating interactive science activities into a cross-curriculum lesson plan. The first example involves the students solving a "crime." Students will learn science concepts from genetics, chemistry, human body, and forensics. Second, you will learn some techniques and tactics to use science demonstrations in the classroom to start the process (or conclude the process) of cross-curriculum investigations. These ideas can be easily modified to fit the time and level needed.

It all starts with a question: Inspiring tomorrow’s scientists and engineers through biographies
Charles Henry Turner’s curiosity about the world around him led to a groundbreaking career as the first Black entomologist in the US. His life story, told by Janice Harrington in her book “Buzzing with questions: The inquisitive mind of Charles Henry Turner,” is one example of books that can be used to shape students’ views of who scientists and engineers are. In this session, a science educator and literacy educator will share examples of high-quality print and media resources to broaden students’ perspectives of science careers.

Promoting Modeling Labs for Physics
Teachers will view an array of Mechanics Labs from the modeling curriculum. These inquiry-based labs are designed to engage students in discovering and deriving equations from data. Modeling reorganizes the traditional physics curriculum around a smaller group of conceptual models. This teaching method changes how students "do science" in the classroom. Research has shown that students in Modeling Instruction classrooms perform significantly better on measures of conceptual knowledge than similar students in traditional science classrooms.

Using Phenomena to get Students Excited About Science!
Natural phenomena are observable events that occur in our world. We can use our science knowledge to explain or predict phenomena. For example, why do images shift when looking through water? Why do bees swarm? What is special about the Rose of Jericho? Together, we will explore these questions using the Phenomena for NGSS website. Tap into your students’ inner scientist, and allow them to build their scientific knowledge by developing general ideas, based on evidence, that explain phenomena.
